With Audi’s first ever 590bhp RS e-tron GT hot off the production line, what better time to pit the 155mph all-electric sportscar against another Ingolstadt relative, a second-generation Audi Formula E car in a drag race.

And why stop there? Who better to pilot the brand new road-going RS e-tron GT than 2016 F1 world champion Nico Rosberg, a man with a heavy interest in electric-powered automotive projects, with 2016-17 Formula E champion Lucas di Grassi at the wheel of the single-seater.

Rosberg’s RS e-tron GT is capable of producing about 590 hp and 612 lb-ft of torque, putting out 637bhp on overboost and good for a 0-60 time of 3.1 seconds with a top speed of 155 mph.

Di Grassi’s Formula E car, meanwhile, puts out a lot less power and the second-generation open-wheel racer has an output of about 335bhp, but thanks to its low weight, and the fact that is is built solely for motorsport competition it can manage the 0-60mph sprint in under 3 seconds.

With it being February, in Germany, the conditions for the contest were hardly ideal as freezing temperatures and customary snowfall made optimal performance impossible. Still, it makes for a great bit of high speed theatre, and it is great to see what vehicles at the top of the EV food chain can do.
